With a project set to be completed, our team figured out which of the TBF solutions would be best used to make a beautiful basement and staying in the homeowners price range. All of the installations and solutions that were decided upon included the following: Everlast wall panels, ThermalDry flooring tiles, a baseboard heating system, an electrical system, ceiling linen, and a new door with a frame. All of these solutions would prove essential in creating this complete transformation of the basement.

To begin, our crew initially wanted to get the electrical system implemented in order for them to then build the rest of the basement around the system. Along with the electrical system came the baseboard heating system. At a fair price, our team also added a heating system which the basement did not previously have. With the addition of this, the homeowner's memory of his cold basement were soon to be forgotten. Once the electrical system and baseboard heating system were installed, the more noticeable changes began to occur. To begin, Everlast walls panels were attached to the wall framing and quickly covered up the bland concrete walls. These was do not allow excess water to enter from the basement walls and are remarkably appealing to the eye. White Ceiling tiles were also put up to cover the framing of the floor above it as well as the many messy looking wires.

As for the flooring, ThermalDry flooring tiles were installed throughout the entire basement floor. With these tiles, they capture any excess water vapor from under them and disallow them from coming up through the floor and eventually causing the vapor to evaporate, which proves beneficial when trying to avoid any excess water or water damage in a basement. These tiles by themselves also keep the ground 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the old concrete floor could. After properly covering the entire basement floor, the concrete was no longer observable and the entire look of the basement had improved greatly. With the largest parts of finishing the basement completed, all that was left were the installations of the outlets, jacks, light bulbs, and smoke alarms.

With professional and timely working done by our TBF crew, this basement had gone from nothing more than a storage unit to an appealing area that gave the homeowner many possibilities as to what to do next with his new and improved basement. After this large project was completed, the homeowner showed an immense amount of gratefulness and was thrilled with the outcome.

This basement located in Monroe, CT had plenty usable space, but was completely unfinished. At the time, this basement was only used for storage and was a cold, and underappreciated part of the house. Once the homeowner had realized its potential and figured it was time for the basement to be finished, a call was made to Total Basement Finishing. Our sales representative, Vincent Orsini was able to inspect the basement as well as listen to what the homeowners wanted the basement to eventually look like. After making a plan and mapping out how to turn this basement into something special, a TBF team was put together and ready to completely upgrade the look of this basement.

With a monster project set to be completed, there were many installations of our solutions that were going to be made. All of the installations and solutions used include the following: Everlast wall panels, a full bathroom, a sewage ejection pump, a SaniDry dehumidifier, a mahogany staircase, 10 doors, 2 smoke alarms, 42 outlets or switches, a base electrical system, 30 light bulbs, and a handrail for the staircase. All of these solutions would prove essential in creating this complete transformation of the basement.

To begin, our crew initially wanted to get the electrical system implemented in order for them to then build the rest of the basement around the system. A sewage pump was also installed in order for maximum performance of draining from the sewage lines. Once the electrical system and sewage pump was installed, the more noticeable changes began. To begin, Everlast walls panels were attached to the wall framing and quickly covered up the unattractive concrete walls. These was do not allow excess water to enter from the basement walls and are remarkably appealing to the eye. As for the staircase, the old staircase was completely renovated with mahogany wood and a new handrail to change the entire visual of the staircase. Everlast half-wall panels were also installed around the staircase to match the rest of the basement.

As for the flooring, a light pecan colored flooring was installed throughout the entire basement. After properly covering the entire basement floor, the concrete was no longer observable and the entire look of the basement had improved greatly. With the largest parts of finishing the basement completed, all that was left were the installations of the outlets, jacks, light bulbs, smoke alarms, the dehumidifier, and one last unique request the homeowners had. With the simple electrical installations made, a SaniDry dehumidifier was then installed which is useful in filtering any unwanted air particles from the basement and keeping the air clean. The last aspect of the basement finishing was the unique request of adding a wall-sized wine storage unit. Made from wood, the design allowed hundreds of wine bottles to be stored in this basement and added a whole new dynamic to the basement.

After this large project was completed, there was clearly a massive change and the homeowners could not have been more grateful. This is a prime example of the unbelievable work our TBF crew can do.

This basement located in Riverside, CT had plenty of space in terms of square-footage, but was completely unfinished. There was unbelievable potential for this basement but it was a cold, dull, and murky basement. Once the homeowner had realized its potential and knew that it was in need of finishing, a call was made to Total Basement Finishing. Our sales representative, Vincent Orsini was able to inspect the basement as well as listen to what the homeowners wanted the basement to eventually look like. After making a plan and mapping out how to turn this basement into something special, a TBF crew was assembled and put to the task.

Service Ride Along With Sam Bullock

Welcome to the first edition of the Service Ride Along blog series!
Throughout the summer, I will be riding shotgun with several Connecticut Basement Systems Service Technicians as they travel around Connecticut and Westchester County to learn more about what they do.

Welcome to the first edition of the Service Ride Along blog series!

Throughout the summer, I will be stepping out of the office to ride shotgun with several Connecticut Basement Systems Service Technicians as they travel around Connecticut and Westchester County. Along the way, I will learn more about each Technician and see firsthand how they are able to maintain dry basements and crawl spaces for thousands of Connecticut Basement Systems customers.

For my first Ride Along, I accompanied Sam Bullock on a service stop in Cheshire, Connecticut. On the morning of the Ride Along, I arrived at the office earlier than usual to meet up with Sam before his appointment. As Sam and I make our introductions, his friendly nature and professionalism as a technician are the first things that I notice. He greets me with a handshake and a smile and begins to prepare his truck for the day.

Before we leave, Sam loads his truck with anything and everything that he might need for his upcoming stops. He explains the importance of being prepared at every appointment – you never know for sure what equipment you might need at a service stop, after all. This is exactly why Sam maintains a high level of organization in his truck, with labeled shelves and compartments for each different piece of equipment. Now that Sam has prepared himself for a day of service stops, it is time to hit the road.

The drive to Cheshire is only about 30 minutes long, but in that time, I learn a great deal about Sam. He is a casual New York sports fan – Giants, Knicks, Yankees – and loves to travel. He talks about his family and his experiences on a recent trip to France (Italy is next on his list of places to visit). Sam is easy to talk to and our ride together is enjoyable. It is easy to see why he has been an integral part of the Connecticut Basement Systems Service Team for over 15 years.

As we get closer to the customer’s home, Sam’s focus shifts back to his morning appointment. Still on our drive, he calls the customer to let them know that we are on our way, and to give them notice of when we will arrive. As I question Sam about the appointment, I learn that he has performed annual maintenance at this address for the past five years and as a result, knows the homeowner quite well.

Sam tells me that the customer was once in the Military Police Corp and is now a retired State Trooper. When we pull into the driveway and the homeowner opens his door, they shake hands and greet each other almost more like friends than business acquaintances. They ask about one another’s family and the homeowner nods as Sam heads down to the crawlspace – it’s clear he is familiar with the home and doesn’t need much direction.

Luckily for me, the crawl space is well-kept and relatively spacious. A neat layer of Clean Space Vapor Barrier covers the walls and floor, so the customer can use the area as a storage space, and we stay clean as we crawl through it.

Following Sam, we make our way to the back corner of the crawl space, where the customer’s SmartSump pump and SaniDry dehumidifier are located. Sam is precise but efficient in his work. He cycles the SmartSump and pulls it out to clean it, then tests the battery and moves onto the SaniDry dehumidifier. As he changes the filter and checks the unit for issues, I ask Sam about the importance of annual product maintenance – after all, this customer has scheduled an annual appointment for 5 consecutive years. He responds by explaining the annual service appointments are about catching small problems before they evolve into larger ones.

For example, a functional SmartSump or SaniDry will turn off automatically when it does not need to be running. When they are in need of repair, however, it is possible that these pieces of equipment will run continuously, which can lead to high electrical bills and eventually, to further damage to the equipment. Nobody wants to increase the cost of their energy bills, and damaged equipment can leave your home at risk for an increase of moisture, or worse, a flooded area. Sam cleans and monitors the health of these devices, and his quick annual visits have prevented unexpected disasters for countless homeowners throughout his 15-year career.

At this stop, Sam notices that the customer has an old dehumidifier model – the SaniDry CX, which has since been phased out in favor of the newer SaniDry Sedona model. Almost immediately, Sam suspects that there is something wrong with the customer’s SaniDry CX. He begins to investigate and soon finds that there is an issue with the refrigeration system in the unit, and notes that the customer has had to repair this same dehumidifier once before.

Because of this, Sam recommends that the customer upgrade to a newer SaniDry. Even though the initial cost of upgrading is higher than the cost of the repair to the old unit, Sam believes that upgrading will save the homeowner time and money in the long run, by limiting future repairs. After some thought, the customer thanks Sam for his advice, but still decides to keep his current dehumidifier and pay for the repair. Even though this goes against his recommendation, Sam respects the homeowner’s decision and loads the dehumidifier into his truck without any further discussion.

After preparing some quick paperwork, Sam is packing up and shaking hands with the homeowner once more. I’ll be staying with Sam for one more appointment, so we head back to the truck and get back on the road. When we arrive at the next address, Sam tells me that this dealing with this house will be slightly different, since he has never made a visit here before. For new jobs like this one, he is always sure to introduce himself to the homeowner and ask them where to enter and exit the house before removing any equipment from the truck.

After another friendly introduction we move into the basement, where the homeowner talks with Sam and is surprised to hear that the battery on her TripleSafe sump pump may need to be replaced soon. Sam is understanding and provides a clear explanation. He relates the sump pump battery to the battery in a cell phone. Just like a cell phone, the battery in a sump pump loses capacity over time (typically about 7% each year). Eventually, the battery cannot hold a charge long enough to remain effective and must be replaced.

Connecticut Basement Systems recommends that customers replace their TripleSafe sump pump battery every 3 years, but sometimes they can last longer, especially if they have not had to run extensively over that period. Sam carries a piece of equipment that can measure the remaining capacity on the sump pump battery. Luckily, this customer has taken good care of her sump pump by scheduling annual maintenance every year since it was installed, and as he plugs the device into the battery and reads its output, he ultimately decides that it will not need to be replaced until next year.

Though Sam has several more appointments to run, my day on the road is nearing its end. But as Sam packs up on his second job of the day, he talks a little more about the role of Service Technicians at Connecticut Basement Systems. He knows that homeowners are often wary of being sold on work or equipment, and so I asked Sam about his approach to this. Sam explains that his job is not only to provide service to equipment and homes, but also to be honest and transparent with every one of his customers. He performs maintenance, gathers information, and relays his recommendation to the homeowner. He explains that beyond this point, all decisions are ultimately in the customer’s hands.

While Sam’s friendly personality and professionalism as a Service Technician make it easy for customers to welcome him into their home, I think his ability to be honest and establish a trusting relationship with them is what leaves a lasting impression on them. I am happy to have had the opportunity to ride with Sam today, and to have learned a lot along the way.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Taz Peterson drove to the home to evaluate the basement. He quickly realized that finishing this basement would be an extensive project. Each wall was comprised of a concrete lower half with wooden studs for the upper half. On every wall and throughout the basement sealing, fiberglass insulation was exposed and often sagging or hanging down. Unsightly plumbing, wiring, and support poles were visible in several places, and the basement stairs were unfinished as well. After he finished surveying the area, Taz shared his findings with the homeowner and suggested some possible solutions for finishing the basement. The homeowner agreed with Taz’s assessment and, after further discussing his options, decided to move forward with the project.

On the day of production, Bruce Reynolds and his crew traveled to the home to begin their work. First, the team tackled the unfinished walls by installing EverLast throughout the basement. EverLast isn’t just a wall panel, it is a moisture and mold-resistant insulating wall system. Made from 2 ½ inches of rigid foam insulation and a 1/2-inch vinyl-finished concrete cladding, EverLast provides a clean, finished look and an R-value of R-13. Being 197% stronger than traditional drywall, EverLast provides durability, insulation, and visual appeal all in one. All of this is why EverLast is backed by a 50-year transferable warranty, and why the homeowner chose it for his basement.

The crew then began installing Finished Linen Ceiling Tiles. Unlike other tiles, Finished Linen tiles are made from stone wool fiber. Most tiles are made from wood fiber, which is vulnerable to moisture, mold, and sagging over time. Finished Linen tiles have a 30-year warranty against both mold and sagging, which are common problems for less durable ceiling tiles. The homeowner chose Finished Linen tiles because they are aesthetic, durable, and the removable tiles allow for easy access to all overhead plumbing and wiring.

Next, the crew installed ThermalDry vinyl floor tiles in Sandstone Gray. Like EverLast and Finished Linen tiles, ThermalDry flooring is specifically designed for basement environments. Made from inorganic materials, these 1’x1’ tiles will not be damaged by moisture or support mold growth. Each tile also stands on small plastic pegs that create a thermal break between the tile and the cold concrete below, keeping ThermalDry 8-10 degrees warmer than the existing concrete floor. Plus, the tiles simply snap together with interlocking joints, which makes installation speedy and allows for easy individual tile replacement in the case of floor damage. With all this to offer, the homeowner knew that ThermalDry would help give him a beautiful basement that lasts.

With that, the crew wrapped up the project and began clean-up. As they finished the job, the homeowner was stunned to see how his basement had been transformed. The downstairs space had recently been no more than a cluttered storage room. Now, it had become a beautiful living space that the homeowner could share with his family for years to come.

This Windham, CT homeowner’s basement was completely unfinished and practically unlivable. Since the family did not typically go downstairs, it had become a cluttered storage space over time. Rather than let this space go to waste, the homeowner decided that he wanted to transform his unfinished basement into a beautiful living space for him and his family to enjoy. He previously had his basement waterproofed by Connecticut Basement Systems and knew that they had a division devoted to basement finishing, so he reached out to the experts at Total Basement Finishing for a no-cost, no-obligation estimate.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Vin Orsini traveled to the home to survey the basement. Although some parts of the basement were partially finished, Vin could see that the walls and flooring needed to be replaced. Much of the basement floor was simply cold concrete, while the carpeted portions were worn thin and peeling at the edges. Some walls were also unfinished, and some were covered with outdated wood paneling, which is vulnerable to water damage and mold growth in the basement. Vin explained his findings to the homeowner and suggested some possible solutions that would help transform his basement. After some discussion, the homeowner agreed with Vin’s assessment and decided to move forward with the project.

Foreman Wayne Miller and his crew arrived on the day of production to begin their work. They began by removing the outdated basement walls, which the homeowner had decided to replace with EverLast walls. Made from 2 ½ inch thick rigid foam insulation and a ½ inch thick concrete cladding, these walls offer many advantages that traditional drywall does not. The rigid foam component provides an R-value of at least R-13, which eliminates the need for fiberglass batts and makes for speedy installation. The concrete cladding is finished with a durable vinyl surface treatment that makes EverLast 197% stronger than drywall. These walls are also specifically designed for the basement, as they cannot be damaged by moisture and will not support mold growth – which is why they are backed by a 50-year transferable warranty. With their aesthetic look and functional appeal, EverLast walls are the perfect fit for any basement.

Next, the crew installed TBF Ceiling Tiles throughout the basement. The homeowner selected the “Linen Stone Wool Ceiling Tile,” which brightens the basement and gives it a clean, finished look. Much like EverLast, these ceiling tiles are specifically designed for basement use. They will always maintain their rigid shape and come with a 30-year warranty against sagging and mold growth. Ceiling tiles are also convenient because they provide a finished look without blocking off access to plumbing or electrical wiring overhead. If you need to perform maintenance overhead, you can simply remove a tile and put it back in place when you are done.

Finally, the crew installed ThermalDry flooring in Sandstone Gray, which the homeowner had chosen for its aesthetic appeal as well as its practical benefits. ThermalDry flooring comes in 1’x1’ square tiles that attach to one another with interlocking joints. This makes installation quick and simple, plus allows homeowners to replace damaged tiles with ease. Each piece is supported by small plastic pegs, which elevate the tile above the concrete. This creates a thermal break between the concrete and your flooring, keeping ThermalDry 8-10 degrees warmer than the cold concrete all the time. ThermalDry – like all Total Basement Finishing Products – is as beautiful as it is functional.

The crew wrapped up production and the homeowner was shocked to see how his basement had been transformed. Once a musty storage area, his basement had become as comfortable and beautiful as the rest of his home. He was excited by the results and could not wait to enjoy his new basement for years to come.

This Ashford, CT homeowner’s basement used to be a cluttered and uninviting part of his home. It was cold, dark, and had become heavily cluttered over time. Since the downstairs space was not livable, the homeowner had not used it for much other than storage. He wanted to transform this dingy area into a beautiful part of his home, so he reached out to the experts at Total Basement Finishing for assistance.

Our Silly for Sue fundraiser continues at the Production meeting! With the past success we had, it only made sense that we attend every department meeting. So, on June 28, 2018, we set up the tarp, got out the remaining cans of silly string and prepped our targets. Since the fundraiser was being held at the Production meeting, we invited the Production managers to be our targets, which they willingly obliged. The silly string cans were selling like hot cakes and the production team was ready to go. Jason Wood, Paul Zambrano and Al Guglielmoni were ready and in 3…2…1 silly string was flying everywhere! The managers were covered with all different color silly string and we raised more money to give to our fellow co-worker, Sue, to help with her impending medical costs.

With the great success that we had at our first Silly for Sue fundraiser, we decided to continue the fundraiser at the next Service Meeting. This would have to be a special fundraiser because this is Sue's department. The amount of kind words, prayers and generosity from the Service Department has been overwhelming. So how do we raise the bar for this fundraiser? We invite the attendees of SOE.

This would have to be a special fundraiser because this is Sue’s department. The amount of kind words, prayers and generosity from the Service Department has been overwhelming. So how do we raise the bar for this fundraiser? We invite the attendees of SOE.

What is SOE? The School of Entrepreneurship is a leadership and personal development program for contractors to help improve their business and themselves. Hundreds of people gather for thee classes and we invited them all to participate in Silly for Sue after the Service Meeting.

On June 22, 2018, the Marketing Department set up the tarp, silly string and tables outside in preparation of Service Manager Brian Hammac and General Manager Ross Mannuzza as our silly string targets. The attendees of SOE, the entire Service Department and fellow office employees created a great turn out! The same procedure followed as the previous fundraiser, $5 a can and all proceeds went directly to Sue and her family.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and you can hear all the silly string cans shaking in anticipation to spray our targets! We even spotted our owner of Connecticut Basement Systems, Larry Janesky get in on the fundraiser! Right before we were ready to go, General Manager Ross Mannuzza asked if anyone from SOE would like to get sprayed. In great spirits, Kevin Koval from Adirondack Basement Systems volunteered. With our targets ready, the countdown started 3…2…1 and the only thing you can see was colorful silly string sprayed in every direction. With many happy faces, we successfully completed another Silly for Sue!

When it was all said and done, we cleaned up the mess with the help of Warehouse workers and everyone went back to their normal Friday. A fellow coworker in need calls for an entertaining fundraiser!

We were hit with tragedy when one of our coworkers, Sue Rafferty, who worked as a Service Center Specialist in the Service Department had to take an unexpected medical leave. Sue is such a valuable team member and it was devastating to hear the news.

With the accumulating medical bills and not being able to work, we knew that we had to do something to help Sue. We put our thinking caps on and thought of the perfect fundraiser!

Silly for Sue: Who doesn’t love silly string? A favorite pastime for many, we incorporated this into our fundraiser. $5 a can and an employee could silly string their boss! All the proceeds and additional contributions would go to Sue and her family to help decrease her medical costs.

On June 15, 2018, the Marketing Department decided to do the first fundraiser at the Sale’s Meeting that is held every Friday. We were able to get Sales Manager Mike McCarty and Production Manager Jason Wood to be our silly string targets! All the silly string cans were sold and the anticipation to silly string a manager was at an all-time high. On the countdown of 3…2…1 the entire Sales Team and fellow office employees sprayed Mike and Jason. The managers were covered in colorful silly string and everyone had smiles from ear to ear.

An entertaining fundraiser for a worthy cause, this was an instant success! All of us were able to get together to raise a lot of money for our fellow co-worker, Sue. But why stop there? There are many meetings that we could crash to get Silly for Sue, right?

Basement Transformation in Pleasantville, NY

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Vincent Orsini arrived at the home to inspect the basement. After his assessment, he could see that it had the potential to be transformed into a truly beautiful new part of the home. Vincent had some solutions in mind and proposed several products to the homeowners which could help reinvent their basement. After discussing their options, the homeowners decided to move forward with the project.

Production started soon after, with Foreman Tom Connelly leading a crew into the basement to begin the transformation. They quickly installed EverLast Walls throughout the basement, which the homeowner had chosen for their durability and superior insulating power. Made of rigid foam insulation with a vinyl surface-treated concrete cladding, these wall panels eliminate the need for fiberglass batts and are 197% stronger than drywall. Without the need for fiberglass batts, the crew as able to install the walls quickly and effectively.

With the walls in place, the crew began to tackle smaller details of the job. Metal support posts running from the ceiling to the floor would be eyesores in the otherwise finished basement, so the crew concealed them behind smaller portions of EverLast panels. The unfinished stairs in the basement had previously been made of untreated wood but became unrecognizable. The tops of the steps were painted a deep red color, with the bannister and the rest of the stairs painted white. The crew even cut the bottom stair so that it fit neatly over a nearby doorstep.

With these final touches the crew complete the basement and wrapped up production. The homeowners could not believe how their basement had been transformed, and were excited to enjoy their comfortable new living space.

These Pleasantville, NY homeowners were dissatisfied with their unfinished basement. With stone walls and concrete floors, the space was too dark and cold to use for anything but storage. The homeowners finally decided that they wanted to transform their unfinished basement into a beautiful new living space. They previously had their basement waterproofed by Connecticut Basement Systems and knew that the company had a division devoted to basement finishing, so they reached out to the experts at Total Basement Finishing to help them get the most out of their home.

Basement Transformation in Old Greenwich, CT

On the day of the appointment Sales Representative Ken Billerback came to the home to examine the basement. After a swift inspection, he began to envision the basement’s transformation and proposed several of his ideas to the homeowner. Among other changes, he and Ken agreed that the basement would need finished walls, ceiling, and new flooring. They also decided that the basement stairs needed to be adjusted to match the appearance of their surroundings.

Foreman Erik Dobrzycki and his crew soon arrived at the home to begin production. The homeowner chose EverLast Walls because they provide many benefits that drywall does not. EverLast is made from 2 ½ inch thick rigid foam insulation and a ½ inch thick concrete cladding on the surface. This cladding is finished with an off-white vinyl surface treatment – a combination that produces a moisture-resistant wall panel with an impressive insulation value of R-13. EverLast is also dent resistant, and 197% stronger than drywall.
The homeowner needed to finish the overhead portion of his basement too, and for this he chose Ceiling Linen. Ceiling Linen is a functional but aesthetically pleasing ceiling tile system specifically designed for basements. The tiles can easily be removed for access to any unsightly plumbing or wiring that hides behind them. With a 30-year warranty against sagging and mold, these tiles are perfect for finishing any basement.

Next the crew added to the basement by installing ThermalDry carpet. Unlike other flooring, ThermalDry is mold and moisture resistant. Each carpet square rests on small plastic pegs, which allows air to circulate below the carpet and dry out moisture as necessary. These pegs also create a thermal break between the cold concrete floor and the carpet that rests on top of it. This thermal break keeps ThermalDry flooring 8-10 degrees warmer than the concrete basement floor. ThermalDry does more than make your basement beautiful, it keeps it warm, dry, and boosts energy efficiency.

Finally, the stairs needed to be adjusted to fit the look of the rest of the basement. The crew decided to completely replace the stairs and added a new handrail to go along with it. With this last touch, the basement was complete. The homeowner was thrilled with the transformation and could not wait to enjoy the comfort of his beautiful new living space.

This Old Greenwich, CT homeowner’s basement used to be a cold, uninviting part of his home. Instead of an unsightly storage area, he wanted to transform his basement into a lovely finished living space. With attractive finished floors, walls, and ceiling he could better enjoy his entire home. Since this homeowner had previously experienced problems with moisture in his basement, he reached out to the experts at Total Basement Finishing to help him create a dry, beautiful basement.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Tony Van Deusen traveled to the home to examine the basement. Tony quickly realized the room’s potential and proposed several products that would help transform it into a beautiful living space.

Foreman Sheldon Lennon and his crew soon traveled to the home to begin production. The homeowner selected EverLast Basement Wall Panels because they offer many advantages that drywall does not. Unlike drywall, EverLast won’t support mold growth, be damaged by moisture, or lose insulation value when wet. This is because EverLast is made from 2 ½ inch thick rigid foam insulation. The surface of the wall panel is ½ inch thick cement board cladding, finished with an off-white vinyl surface treatment. The resulting product is significantly more durable than drywall and offers far greater insulation value than fiberglass.

Then the crew installed Ceiling Linen, an aesthetically pleasing ceiling tile that is mold and sag resistant. The removable tile allows for access to plumbing and wiring, but also provides fire protection and sound absorption.

Next the crew installed the ThermalDry. The homeowner ordered this beautiful plank flooring in Walnut, and it really completed the basement. ThermalDry is mold resistant and will not absorb moisture, plus installation is speedy because the tiles simply snap together with interlocking joints. Finally, the flooring is made with a built-in thermal break that keeps the tiles 8-10 degrees warmer than the concrete below.

For the finishing touch, the crew installed a full bathroom in the corner of the basement. ThermalDry tiles were installed for the bathroom floor there as well, showing how versatile this flooring is. Though compact, the bathroom included a shower with a small decorative entry step.

In total, the project added over 900 square feet of space to the home! With efficient production, Foreman Sheldon Lennon and his crew completely transformed this basement. Now, the homeowner is delighted to spend time in his beautiful new living space!

This Seymour, CT homeowner’s unfinished basement used to be little more than a drab storage space.
Homeowners are more likely than ever to remodel their basement. Why? The initial investment is worth the numerous benefits that come with a finished basement. This blog will go in depth for the reason why you should remodel your basement.

What is the first thing you think of when you think of your basement? Is it dark? Musty? Wet? Wouldn’t you want your basement to be a calm and relaxing area that you enjoy spending time in? With the right products, planning and execution, you can transform your basement into your dream area in your home.

Before anything else, be sure to waterproof your basement before you think about the remodeling. Materials like wood studs, fiberglass insulation, plywood and gypsum board easily succumb to moisture damage, making them unsuitable for basements that already have a damp, dark environment. They provide an ideal habitat for mold that can cause allergic reactions and respiratory ailments and damage to the finished look of your basement. A dry basement is a happy basement!

Now your basement is waterproofed and you want to remodel. What are the reasons why you should with our company?

Moisture and mold free. With over 30 years of basement waterproofing and dehumidification experience, Basement Systems has the best products and techniques available for keeping your basement dry. Our basement finishing products (wall panels, flooring, molding, ceiling tiles and more) are waterproof and won't support mold growth. When you combine the best moisture control techniques with moisture and mold-resistant materials designed specifically for basements, you've got the best formula for a beautiful, long-lasting basement transformation.

Inexpensive extra space. Remodeling your basement is an excellent way to utilize the space you already have. A basement renovation adds a quiet, private space for a fraction of what you'd pay to build an addition and unlike an addition, basement remodeling won't diminish the size of your yard.

Excellent return on investment. Finishing all or part of your basement is a definite way to increase the value of your house. A basement remodel ranks right up there with kitchen and bath remodeling in terms of improving a home's resale value.

Energy savings. Many unfinished basements have too many air leaks and too little insulation. As a result, the basement can waste energy and compromise the comfort of upstairs living space. Adding insulation and super-efficient windows in the basement will improve your home's comfort while saving money on heating and cooling costs. There's a bonus for upgrading your basement's energy efficiency: You may qualify for rebates for certain energy upgrades.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Taz Peterson arrived at the home to inspect the basement. He concluded that there was a lot of potential for this basement to be transformed to beautiful! Taz went over the different type of design options that can happen in this basement. Next, he discussed the different products Connecticut Basement Systems has to offer that will effectively change the functionality of the basement.

The homeowners decided to install EverLast walls, EverLast window inserts, ThermalDry flooring, ceiling linen, post wrap and a SaniDry. Another great benefit for our flooring system is that they are relatively easy to install with a unique snapping pattern which means the project will move along quicker. With all of these effective products combined, it will have the basement be both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

Kryzstof Wilk and his production team installed all the waterproofing products professionally and efficiently. They first started with the WaterGuard System. The perimeter of the floors had to be excavated because the system is placed internally. This system will collect and channel the water that wants to enter the basement to the new sump pump. Once the system is placed, it is back filled with gravel and sealed off with cement. The system is then hooked up to the TripleSafe Sump Pump which will bring the water away from the home. Lastly, they found the perfect spot for the SaniDry Sedona.

Chavon Bowman and his team were responsible for installing the new walls and floors. They first installed the BrightWall Panels which was a great choice for the area because it prevents any water vapor from entering the basement and it also gives the space a bright, fresh look. The ThermalDry Charcoal Carpet with gray frame was installed. This carpet is completely waterproofed and will keep the floors warm and inviting.

Larry Janesky Featured on Dream Room Makeover
2011-10-12T00:00:00.05Z
Francine Maglione
When the Fox 61 show "Dream Room Makeover" sent out a call for the worst living room in Connecticut, no one could have expected an almost completely bare space in South Windsor with just one broken chair and some old pink drapes. The show immediately enlisted the help of local contractors to change the appearance of the drab and empty room, but Larry Janesky's Seymour-based Connecticut Basement Systems and Dr. Energy Saver companies stepped in to save the room in a way that wasn't immediately visible. And, the work his crews performed benefitted the entire house!

The television show, hosted by Mar Jennings, takes a dull and lifeless-looking room and redesigns it to make it stylish and different. The contest winner's barren living room had nothing in it but a lamp, a chair, and old drapes and flooring from before he purchased the house. He was at a loss when it came to redecorating, so he contacted the show for help. A number of local companies pitched in to help by donating labor and materials.

Janesky and his team installed blown insulation into the contest winner's attic. Blow-in insulation is installed faster and more uniformly then other types of insulation. Blown insulation also has an R-value of about 3.4 per inch. It comes in dense blocks that are wrapped in plastic. To install the material, each block is cut in half and pushed into a combination shredder/blower machine that feeds a long, flexible installation hose.

Adding extra insulation to an attic is a surefire way to help keep a home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Many times, the minimum amount of insulation required in a house is not nearly enough to keep the house comfortable. Energy experts can add more insulation and also seal any air leaks to prevent outside air from getting inside.

"What we want to do is keep more of the air we pay to heat and cool in the house longer by air sealing the attic," Janesky said. "You can expect lower fuel and electric bills and a more comfortable home."

Finished Basement Flooring - Then and Now
2010-09-23T00:00:00.05Z
Kristina McGovern
See the pros and cons of basement flooring and what you can do to get what's right for your basement. From linoleum to wood, ceramic to tile -- this is how we make the old things rock!

Like all things these days, basement flooring has made some huge advancements from the past. What is being understood more and more often today, is that these floorings simply do not work. Here are a few things to think about:

Concrete is porous and absorbs moisture. Because of this, water vapor continuously passes upwards through the floor and into the basement.

Concrete is cold because it's surrounded by damp, cold earth.

Most basements have a high probability of flooding from plumbing, basement windows, water heater, washing machines, or through the foundation floor.

If you have a basement finishing project in mind and want to install traditional finishing materials like drywall, think again. Basements remodeled with traditional materials, such as carpeting, drywall, linoleum, tile, and wood, are being ruined and ripped out every day.
Then: Linoleum Floors

Linoleum flooring is a fast, cheap, roll-out flooring that is occasionally used for basement renovations. Because it's so easy to install, many homeowners are tempted to grab a roll for their finished basement space. Of course, linoleum is not known for its beauty, and it would rarely, if ever, be someone's first choice if price was no object.

While linoleum makes a fair cost-effective solution for upstairs rooms, it's a terrible idea for a basement floor finishing. To be installed, linoleum must be adhered to a subfloor below the main flooring. In the case of a basement, your subfloor is basement concrete, with moisture passing through continuously. This moisture works to break down the adhesives that bind the linoleum to the concrete, making its seal loosen, blister, and eventually peel up. And if the adhesives use organic material, they'll grow mold and mildew as they peel. Flooring designs that adhere to the floor -- such as linoleum and paint, will always fail.

Now: Wood-Design Waterproof Parquet Floor Tiles

One great substitution for linoleum on the basement floor is to find a parquet-design basement floor tile like Total Basement Finishing's ThermalDry Parquet Floor Tiles. They install quickly and easily, and you can use them as soon as the installation is done. They're more attractive and durable than traditional linoleum flooring, and because they install without glues or adhesives, humidity moving upward from the basement floor will never cause them to peel or blister off your floor!

ThermalDry Parquet Flooring is made out of completely inorganic materials, so they will not support the growth of mold or mildew, and they're much longer-lasting and more durable than linoleum. And if one tile is ever scratched, punctured, or otherwise damaged, they can be easily replaced -- even by a do-it-yourself homeowner. So why settle for ugly linoleum flooring?

Then: Ceramic, Stone, and Marble Basement Floor Tiles

One idea for a basement floor that appeals to many homeowners is to add the time-honored beauty of stone, ceramic, or marble floor tiles to their finished basement. At a glance, this sounds like a great idea. However:

1. These tiles are installed with grout, which can grow bacteria, mildew, and mold and must be maintained.
2. The tiles bond to the basement floor, so they are hard, cold, and unforgiving.
3. Removal of tiles from the basement floor is expensive and nearly impossible, because you're trying to remove grout from cement.

Yes, they're gorgeous. But don't you also want a welcome environment, a warm surface underfoot, and the option to change your mind about your basement flooring someday?

Now: Tile-Design Basement Flooring for Basements

Instead of committing to a lifetime of hard, cold tiles made of stone, ceramic, or marble, consider installing equally attractive plastic basement flooring tiles. These tiles click together and install as a floating floor on your basement concrete. There's no need to keep everything you stored in your basement upstairs for days while you wait for the grout to set - they're ready to use immediately after installation.

Basement floor tiles like the ones provided by Total Basement Finishing rest on raised pegs, creating an air space beneath. This space ensures that moisture will not be trapped beneath, and it creates a thermal break, making the surface of the tiles 8-10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the cold concrete below. Their plastic design makes them more forgiving of falls and dropped items, and should you ever want to remove them -- the can be pulled up easily, with no need to scrape away grout.

Then: Wood Basement Floors and Sub Floors

Wood finishing on a basement floor is among the worst possible finishing options there are. Wood soaks up moisture from the concrete floor beneath like a sponge, causing them to swell and buckle from moisture underneath -- where dehumidifiers can't reach it. If there's ever a basement flood, water will be trapped in the wood as well. Mold can start to establish itself in a wood floor in just 24-48 hours, and once it's begun, it's expensive and difficult to stop it. We've seen hundreds of basements with ruined wood floors!

Height in a basement finishing plan is critical, and wood flooring doesn't help. Wood basement floors take up as much as 3-4" of head space, which is sometimes just enough to make the basement not code-compliant for basement finishing. And if your wood floors are ever ruined and need to be removed, you can bet it's going to be hard to find a contractor willing to rip out your old, moldy, rotting lumber, drag it out of the basement, and dispose of it.

Now: Wood Laminate Basement Flooring

Admittedly, there's nothing as warm, inviting, and attractive as a beautiful wood basement floor. However, there are options for basement flooring that can be installed without taking up several inches of your valuable head room, without being damaged by moisture, and without the risk of having to rip out and replace your basement floor should a basement flood occur.

Products such as Total Basement Finishing's Millcreek basement flooring do just this. Warrantied to be 100% waterproof, it won't be damaged by a basement flood, and its design is more durable and long-lasting than a wood floor. Unlike a wood subfloor, Millcreek flooring only takes 1/4" of a basement's head space, leaving you more vertical room in the finished basement. And because it installs as a floating floor, there's no adhesives to peel, and removal of the flooring is easy in inexpensive.

Then: Basement Carpet on Concrete or a Wood Subfloor

There's only one basement flooring material that soaks up moisture more than wood -- carpeting. When placed on a basement floor, carpeting pulls in moisture like a sponge until it's completely soaked. One flooded basement, and you can count on a moldy, musty odor in your finished basement for years to come.

If a basement carpet is laid directly on the floor, then it'll also soak up moisture and humidity passing upwards from the concrete below. Since it's laying directly on the cold concrete, it will also be cold and uncomfortable underfoot. If it is laid on a wood basement sub floor, then you have all the problems of wood floor -- less head space, rotting wood, buckling wood flooring, and mold -- combined with a moldy, rotting carpet. And because you've installed carpeting, you're committed to a long, unbroken sheet on your basement floor. This means that any stain, tear, or worn spot is permanent -- you'll just have to live with it or replace the whole thing.

Now: Inorganic Interlocking Carpeted Tiles

Instead of installing carpet on a subfloor or directly on the concrete itself, find a basement flooring option that will act as both a sub floor and carpeted surface. The ideal solutions are ThermalDry Basement Floor Tiles, as provided by CT Basement Finishing and elsewhere in Connecticut.

ThermalDry carpeted floor tiles are a basement subfloor and finished floor surface in one. They interlock to prevent humidity from rising upwards into the basement, while they are completely waterproof and will not support mold growth. Should one become worn or damaged- for example, at the bottom of a staircase -- they can easily be removed and replaced.

If you have your heart set on your own carpeting design -- perhaps to match the space upstairs, CT Basement Finishing can still help. We offer unfinished floor tiles as well, which will stop humidity and keep your floor's surface 8-10 degrees warmer than the concrete below. ThermalDry basement sub floor matting will double the life of your custom basement carpet!
